IMS INSIGHT Series:

Addressing IMS Database Growth

May 7, 2025 | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Eastern Time | Virtual

Overview

Data keeps growing!  Requirements to support data retention, higher volume activity and continuous growth all contribute to pushing the size limitations of z/OS dataset structures. Compression is only a temporary stopgap.

In the IMS world, there is a method to cope: IMS High Availability Large Database (HALDB). If you are looking to implement this solution, or review what your environment has already implemented, then this session is for you.

HALDB has been available since IMS V7 and provides a partitioned structure of a DBD that allows up to 80 terabytes of available data in the IMS hierarchical view. This view completely bypasses the z/OS ceilings of VSAM 4G and OSAM 8G limitations.

This session speaks to the infrastructure and implementation of HALDBs. We will address the HALDB structure as well as how to convert from a Full Function database to a HALDB configuration. Secondly, we will demonstrate how a conversion might work for your environment.
