Session 5: Modernizing the Great z/VM Platform with zPRO

Rich Smrcina and James Vincent, Velocity Software

Abstract: Many attempts have been made to modernize z/VM. The z/VM community finally has something that is easy to use, lightweight, and provides significant function toward that goal. With zPRO we can accomplish many typical systems programming tasks. Managing storage servers, spool, security, shared file systems, virtual networks; taking backups and task scheduling are among the many features that are implemented to make the system programmers job easier, in addition to zPRO’s traditional strengths in virtual server management. This session will provide you all the details behind what zPRO can do for you and be a fun and interactive free-for-all to get your feedback on ideas to make zPRO even better!

Speaker Bio: James Vincent has been working with z/VM since 1985 and building large z/VM for virtual Linux farms since 2005. He is currently working for Velocity Software as a Sr. Systems Architect developing zPRO, their premier Cloud and Host Manager for z/VM. He enjoys kayaking, reading, action/sci-fi shows, and sipping a fine Bourbon in his spare time.

Speaker Bio: Rich Smrcina started his IT career in 1979. Starting at Aldrich Chemical Company, he worked his way up as Operator, Programmer and then Systems Programmer. His worked on z/VSE, z/VM, Optional Products and Third Party Products. In 1987 he joined a local consulting company and did the same for many companies in the region. He then took a position at Grede Foundries in 1995. He was introduced to Linux on the mainframe in late 1999 and installed it as soon as it was available. Grede became one of the few shops that actually implemented Linux in the early days. The primary function was a set of WebSphere applications to take over for the CICS applications that ran on z/VSE. After another set of jobs in consulting he took his position at Velocity Software in 2010. Rich currently enjoys a variety of tasks, development, customer training, and R&D. Rich is responsible for zALERT and zPORTALl, and maintains the internal z/OS and z/VSE systems.
