You are cordially invited to join us for our next zEnterprise Customer Council event on the campus of MetLife in Cary. The goal of the council is to provide our customers in management positions and their employees a forum to learn the latest System z technologies and directions.

We’ll start off our day with a welcome from our site host, MetLife, followed by Travelport on how they are implementing the use of DevOps practices on the mainframe to improve time to market and application quality. Travelport, with roots going back 45+ years, is a $2.4B Travel Commerce Platform focused on providing distribution, technology, payments, and other solutions. Shirley Choulga, Manager Software Development Engineering, and Suganthi Manonmani of TPF Software Inc. will share how Travelport is modernizing its mainframe environment through DevOps, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the expected benefits.

Our second presentation will be about Z14 Pervasive Encryption.  Data protection and security are business imperatives and it’s no longer a matter of when systems are breached, but when; data is the new perimeter.  You’ll hear how the IBM Z14 provides an unprecedented level of security by providing the ability to encrypt data at rest and in flight.  Extensive use of encryption is one of the most impactful ways to help reduce the risks and financial losses of a data breach and help meet complex compliance mandates. The Z14 is able to provide this level of encryption with little or no impact to performance or monthly software charges and implementation of this capability is done at the platform level with no application changes required.

After lunch, we hear about DevOps: The Future of Mainframe Development.  Many development shops are adopting the use of lean/agile development practices to help meet the demands of the business.  This is driving the need to adopt DevOps practices to support short-turnaround development cycles and the need to drive business value through application enhancements to support ever-changing business requirements. You don’t “buy” DevOps, you “do” DevOps, meaning it’s a mindset and a combination of culture, process and technology.  And it’s not just about the handoff from Dev to Ops, it’s about lean and agile principles applied to the entire lifecycle, including feedback loops. You’ll hear how mainframe shops like yours are adopting DevOps practices that allow them to support development teams to deliver application changes and the speed of business.

We’ll end our agenda with Three Hours to Mainframe: How to Get Millennials Programming on Big Iron, where you’ll hear how open source languages and tools provide an entire ecosystem for millennials on z/OS. You’ll hear first-hand from a millennial mainframer and his demos will include tools from the Open Source Ecosystem (bash, gzip, git, vim) and how these can be used in coexistence with traditional mainframe utilities and tasks.
