Overview

IBM Washington Systems Center is pleased to invite you to our Bringing generative AI to z/OS Application Modernization with IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z Wildfire Workshop.

This workshop will cover these topics:

  • Introduction to IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z
  • Overview of the phases in the IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z workflow:
    • “Understand” – understand your existing COBOL estate
    • “Refactor” – create modular COBOL from your COBOL monolith
    • “Optimize” – analyze, prioritize, and resolve COBOL performance issues
    • “Transform” – use Generative AI to transform refactored COBOL code to Java
    • “Validate” – ensure equivalence of your refactored COBOL and your transformed Java
  • Overview of the “cross-phase” Code Explanation feature that allows you to receive Large Language Model (LLM)-generated natural language explanations of COBOL and JCL
  • Demonstration of the Code Explanation Advice (“Optimize phase”) workflow
  • Hands-on lab

In the lab, students will gain hands-on experience with IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z and will:

  • Explore the “Code Explanation” feature using the
  • Explore the “Understand” phase using the Application Discovery analyze client in IBM Developer for z/OS
  • Explore the “Refactor” phase using the IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z Refactoring Assistant VS Code extension
  • Explore the “Transform” phase using Generative AI and the IBM watsonx Code Assistant VS Code extension
  • Explore the “Validate” phase with the IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z Validation Assistant VS Code extension

Audience

COBOL developers, Java developers, or anyone interested in learning more about using generative AI for z/OS application modernization with IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z

Prerequisites and Additional Information

  • This is a virtual workshop and will be delivered through web conferencing software.
  • The lab will be performed on instructor-provided systems that are accessed through your web browser.
  • The “Code Explanation lab” requires that the student has an IBM Account (also referred to in places as IBM ID or IBMid), which is available for free.  IBMid is an authentication method used by IBM for applications and services.  See https://ibm.com/docs/en/ibmid?topic=introduction for more information and instructions to create an IBMid if you do not have one already.

Registrants will first be placed in Pending Approval status and will be notified of approval when it is made.
Upon approval, connection information will be provided.
