zED Talks gives our audience the opportunity to hear about game changing technology in the mainframe world from talented Subject Matter Experts! Utilizing the TED Talks inspiration of “ideas worth spreading,” this webinar series gives our speakers roughly half an hour (plus some time for Q&A) to illustrate the value of a solution or concept of his or her choosing. Ever wondered how technology buzzwords like DevOps, Blockchain, or AI fit into the Z space? There’s no better place to get an initial understanding of that than right here.

This month, we will discuss IBM Cloud Paks and Openshift on Z! Applications are increasingly moving to a cloud-native format – implemented as containers. This provides greater flexibility in application portability, scalability, and management. The LinuxONE and Linux on IBM Z platforms are excellent environments for deploying cloud native applications due to the security, performance, and scaling capabilities unique to the platform.

This session will discuss the use of IBM Cloud Paks and Red Hat OpenShift with the LinuxONE and Linux on IBM Z platform for the deployment and management of a private cloud. Also discussed will be common “gotchas”, lessons learned and customer experiences with these containerized solutions.

To present this month’s topic, we have Matt Mondics and Paul Novak:

Matt is a Technical Specialist on the Linux containerization SME team in IBM’s Advanced Technology Group (ATG). Matt works with clients through demos, workshops, and Proofs of Concept to modernize IBM Z and LinuxONE environments to include containerized workloads through the use of IBM Cloud Paks and Red Hat OpenShift. His areas of expertise are hybrid cloud architecture, systems management, complex container orchestration, and failure analysis.

Paul is a Technical Specialist on the platform virtualization, Linux, and Linux containerization SME teams in IBM’s Advanced Technology Group (formerly known as ATS or Washington Systems Center). His areas of expertise are z/VM, Linux, hybrid cloud, containers/OCP, Java middleware, automation, and integration.
